Addiction, Podcast
I’m always a little behind trends, in most cases I like to see how they pan out before I fully commit to a new trend. Podcasts would fall into this category. First off, I’m not in my car that often and I don’t wear headphones when I run, so I struggled to find a time when I could listen to podcasts. I’m also not into books on tape, even though I LOVE reading books…hence the reason I’m behind the times here.
When I started my job in Boulder, I was finally in my car longer than 7 mins. So I started listening to podcasts, and I seriously can’t get enough of them. I’m not-so-secretly excited for road trips so I can binge listen to my favorites. Of course ate up Serial, S-Town and Up and Vanished in very few car rides.
Here is my meager list of favorites, some of them are by people I’ve met and now I feel like listening to their podcast is like hanging out with them for an hour…where I don’t have to do any talking. You’ll see I have a very eclectic taste and range of interest…these are in no particular order:
Stuff You Should Know — Entertaining and informative on topics you wouldn’t necessarily seek out. Like Ghost Fishing, Voter Suppression, The Underground Railroad, etc. The hosts Josh and Chuck have a great sense of humor and relay sometimes super technical information in a way everyone can understand…and the bonus is you will be like Cliff Claven with your random facts at parties!
Sonya Looney Show — I met Sonya a while back at Interbike, we were both speaking on a panel about brand influencers and the women’s cycling market. Sonya is a professional mountain biker and specializes in multi-day stage races. She’s got an interesting point of view and seems to be interested in many of the topics I am, plant-based diets, living healthy, endurance sports, etc. It’s possible I have a girl crush on her…but, not in a creepy way. haha.
Her Money by Jean Chatszky — Jean Chatszky is the finance correspondent from the Today Show and I really like listening to her advice on saving, investing, and such.
Intrepid Entrepreneur — Kristen Carpenter-Ogden is the host of this interesting podcast, she chats with very inspiring business people. Kristen founded Verde Brand Communications and I used to work with her agency at one time.
Outside Magazine — Anything outside basically has my interest, but Outside Magazine has different formats within their podcast, “The Science of Survival”, “XX Factor” (about kick-ass women), and their interview series “Dispatches” from their writers in the field.
She Explores — This is a podcast for women who like to spend time outdoors. The episode that really melted my heart was the one where women wrote in stories about their dads and how their dads affected their love for the outdoors.
Craft*ish — When I moved to Colorado I taught myself how to knit from books, back then there weren’t many Youtube videos for help, but one of my favorite shows was “Knitty Gritty” by Vickie Howell. She’s got a new series now “The Knit Show” and this is her podcast of all things creative. She’s interviewed authors, fabric designers, stencil designer, etc. I get all nerdy and crafty after I listen to one of her episodes.
From the Heart — I’ve only listened to a few of her episodes but I really liked her, she’s just become a mother so some of the episodes aren’t relatable to me, but I do like her other episodes.
Human Race (by Runner’s World) — I love everything running and listening to other runners and running topics always inspires me to get out on my morning run. They stopped recording these episodes last year but have a different podcast called Personal Best that I’m looking forward to trying as well.
TED Radio Hour — This is an NPR podcast where they play snipets of TED talks and then interview the speaker. These are very interesting, I only wish sometimes they’d play the full TED talk. And, btw, I had no idea that TED stood for Technology, Education and Design, isn’t that cool?
Untangle — This podcast is produced by Gaiam, who is now Gaia based outside of Boulder, CO. There is a guided meditation app of the same name that I really like. These podcasts are interviews with all kinds of people who practice mindfulness and meditation and their stories/paths on how they got to their practices. I really find these interviews interesting as I dabble with my own meditation practice.
Yarn Thing Podcast by Marly Bird — I sat next to Marly at the Interweave Yarn Fest and became instant friends IRL. I don’t think she knows my name, only that I had wire cutters, so my nickname became “wire cutters”. I didn’t know who she was or that she had a podcast until after the class and now I love listening to her shows.
If you want to share any of your favorite podcasts, please do! I’m always on the hunt for new and interesting ways to feed my little pea brain.
